What does it mean to get into alignment with your true self?

Is the true self the same as the soul? If so, how do you align with your soul?

What the heck does it all mean?!

Spirituality and finding your path can be confusing and frustrating, can’t it?

In this article, we’ll go over everything you need to know about how to get into alignment with your true self.

Before We Get Into It, a Little Background On Me

I categorize myself as an existential and creative type. Although I had some idea of what I wanted in life and went after it, I was quite lost for most of it.

So, naturally, I had to go on the path of soul-searching and self-discovery.

Personal growth articles, self-development books, ten years of psychotherapy, Astrology, days of listening to Oprah and Dr. Wayne Dyer, self-discovery, and personality tests. You name it; I did it.

I’ve gone through several types of awakenings (before I even knew what an awakening was), from existential to hardship and, more recently, a spiritual and kundalini awakening.

In retrospect, though, my life has been and is focused on learning and studying self and Self.

I am far, far from enlightened. That’s for sure.

But after many years, I’ve come to a pretty good understanding of what it means to align with your true self. So, I believe I can provide valuable insight into a question like this.

This article will come from my own experience, opinion, and research.

Take it as a guide, merely another person’s perspective. Your journey and understanding will be your own.

So, as the tarot card readers say, take what resonates and leave the rest behind.

First, Let’s Go Back to the Basics. What is Self?

Self is defined as your personality, identity, or qualities that make up a being.

What is the True Self?

The true self is the innermost authentic core expression of your being. Other words used to describe the true self are pure and truth.

True self helps you discern between your everyday self (everyday ego concerns) and the deeper Self.

What is the Difference Between the Soul and the True Self?

“Soul” and “true self” can be used interchangeably. Both terms are used in psychology, spirituality, and philosophy circles to help people find their true nature.

The word “soul generally has a mysterious and romantic connotation as it is the nonphysical, invisible, and formless part of our human experience.

The soul is believed to be connected to a higher power in religion and spirituality. It is your divine essence.

Normally, psychologists use “true self” to discuss a part of the psyche, but in Hindu and Vedic spiritual traditions, “soul” is also called the true Self or the eternal Self because the soul or eternal Self is believed to live on when the body dies.

Additionally, you will hear spiritual teachers call the Soul pure consciousness or pure awareness

So, really, it depends on who you talk to, which word they’ll use.

The main point, though, is both terms are meant to guide you toward the same abstract concept—love, peace, and possibly beyond.

What Does It Mean to Align With Your True Self?

To align with your true self means to align with the vibrational frequency of love and the vibrations that derive from love: abundance, peace, freedom, gratitude, bliss, and joy.

The first thing to remember is that your body is your first home, and in your being, love is home

Like our physical bodies, which have a normal temperature regulation of 98.6°F (37°C), love is your home vibrational frequency.

It is your true nature. Your divine essence. Your soul. Your true self. It is your most natural and purest state of consciousness.

It is stable, consistent, reliable, and has always been with you.

So the work of aligning to your true self is to search internally for vibrations of love and begin to, at your own will, align everything internally and externally to these vibrations.

What Does Being Aligned Feel Like?

In my experience, alignment with your true self feels like what some people have described as as coming home to Yourself or settling in your own skin.

First, you have to internally find what love and freedom feel like and take care of yourself in a way that always directs you back home. Remember, love is home.

However, on a practical note, externally, you’ll most likely be in the career (or calling) you want to be in or will be making moves to manifest a new career

You’re in the relationship you want to be in or trust that manifesting your ideal partner is around the corner. And if you’re single, you have a great relationship with yourself.

I’m a work in progress, but this is my direct experience with aligning with your true self.

  • Self-acceptance — full acceptance and understanding that life is a co-creation. The soul has a plan. Learning how to listen and work with what my life is telling me.
  • More ease and flow.
  • A focus on what truly matters: prioritizing well-being and joy.
  • A deep connection to my own life and the part I play in the Universe.
  • An inner knowing that I can navigate life well because I know how to navigate my inner life.
  • Self-sufficiency — I know how to meet my own emotional needs. For instance, seeking inwards for understanding versus outwards.
  • I have a great relationship with myself. For example, I know devaluing myself doesn’t serve me or others in the long run.
  • Reconciliation — a completion and finalization of old wounds that were holding me back and forgiving myself and others for past mistakes.
  • I experience more days of calmness and inner stability in my energy. I can still move quickly and be fast-paced, but I’m less internally chaotic. But I had to slow down first.
  • Even if something upsets me, I know how to return home to love quickly. You get better at making peace, forgiving, and letting go.
  • The air quality is so much better! Breathe. Breathe. Breathe.

9 Tips to Get Into Alignment With Your True Self

1. Study Emotions and Consciousness

The first tip for aligning with your true self is to know your emotions and energy system well.

Studying the range of emotions will help you know how to navigate and use your feelings as messages and clues and know when to raise your vibration

Here are two articles that explain the range of emotions. Both are supportive tools for spiritual seekers and manifestors.

2. Self-Love

Self-love is not a hippie thing. It is not a girl thing. It is not a selfish thing. It is not a New Age thing. It is a human thing. Don’t listen to people who negate self-love.

All true spiritual principles will direct you towards vibrations of love like acceptance, forgiveness, compassion, and more.

You need self-love to feel good about who you are, believe you can change, and be a productive, healthy, and functioning human being in society.

It makes you a better partner, family member, coworker, and better at whatever you desire.

If your self-love tank is low, focus on this area. Self-love is the foundation of manifesting and will support you in manifesting your desires.

3. Forgive and Let Go

If you are holding on to past wounds, hurts, and resentments, forgiving and letting go is a (gentle) must. It is the final stage of healing and the way to vibrationally align with your true self.

The Law of Attraction states that “like attracts like,” you attract to yourself that of similar vibration.

Aligning with your true self will support you in attracting what is genuinely suitable for you.

Neville Goddard, the creator of The Law of Assumption, says the best state of consciousness to manifest in is a continuous state of forgiveness, which is the spirit of Christ.

In this state, you embody love and freedom, which makes you magnetic and an unstoppable manifestor. Free to attract all the goodness into your life.

4. Self-Inquiry

The fourth way to align with your true self is self-inquiry.

Self-inquiry is the simplest and most classic method to know your true self. No money is needed here—just you and time.

Start by asking yourself, who am I or what am I? Who is the “I” that is referring to the self? This question will help you penetrate deep into your true nature.

5. Find a 5-Year-Old Picture of Yourself

Your true self is you at five years old.

Long ago, an art teacher once instructed me to get pictures of my 5-year-old self, paste them all over my wall, and stare at them.

Umm…porque? Why?

She stated, “You need to become more spiritual and connect with yourself!”

At the time, I was confused. But, of course, fifteen years later, she was right. It was the best advice, and I’ll never forget it.

Your five-year-old picture is the most powerful way to find your true self. Before the ego develops, this is you at your purest!

Carry it in your purse and wallet, put your picture on your phone, stare at it, and remember that cute, adorable, lovable, pure, and free person that you are!

6. Solitude and Alone Time

Alone and solitude time is essential to align with your true self. If you are undergoing a spiritual awakening, you’ll naturally crave it.

Alone time goes hand-in-hand with self-inquiry. During this time, you can sort through your psyche, release what isn’t you anymore, think about where you want to go from this point forward, and so forth.

Don’t underestimate time with yourself. You become your best friend and begin to love yourself at very deep levels.

Additionally, it’s important to distinguish between isolation and solitude.

In my experience, when I isolated myself, it was marred with an undertone of shame, hopelessness, and self-rejection. It was a reaction to depression.

Conversely, solitude is a choice (not a reaction) with an intention for self-inquiry, spiritual growth, releasing old wounds, raising your vibration, making potential life changes, and finding a connection to your true self and the Universe.

Solitude is more about finding a deep connection, while isolation is disconnecting from the world.

If you feel isolated, please call on friends, family, or a mental health professional for connection and support.

7. Prioritize Joy and Well-being

Decide to prioritize your joy and well-being.

Once you decide that your well-being and happiness are a priority, you’ll intuitively know how to take care of yourself. You’ll instinctively know what’s right for you and what’s not.

This was a significant shift and my favorite! It unlocks levels of freedom, and your true self will begin to show up more and more.

8. Meditation and Prayer

Of course, this list wouldn’t be complete without meditation and prayer.

I know you’ve heard it before, but to get to know your true self, you must find methods to calm down and transcend the ego mind.

As Eckhart Tolle puts it, “You are not your mind.”

Also, check out my article on Dr. David R. Hawkins’ Map of Consciousness.

He scientifically explains the different states of consciousness, from rock bottom states like shame ascending to enlightened states of consciousness like that of ascended spiritual masters.

He explains how intellectualism can block one from experiencing higher forms of love.

So meditation or prayer is essential in finding your true self.

9. Connect to Your Intuition

Intuition is the small, tiny voice spiritual teachers refer to and remind us to listen to, but we repeatedly dismiss it until one day, it finally clicks.

Your intuition operates at the level of the soul. When you align with your intuitive knowing and trust yourself, you are aligning with your true self. If you want to connect more with your intuition, meditation practices and quieting your thoughts will help it become stronger and louder.
